A northern elephant seal mom and pup in central California. In about 4 weeks time this pup will weigh about 300 pounds. Mom fasts and loses 1/2 of her body weight while providing for her pup. At the end of those 4 weeks she departs to return to her feeding grounds off the coast of Alaska. Elephant seals make the trip between their feeding grounds and their favored beaches twice a year. This mileage adds up to 11,200 miles for females and 13,000 miles for males each year.
