Guanaco (Lama guanicoe) were the most common wildlife we saw in Patagonia in July.. They are also the main prey for mountain lions (pumas) in the area. Mountain lions must rely on their camouflage and stealth to hunt a guanaco. They can run fast with top speeds of 50mph but only for a short burst. Guanacos are no slouch and can run up to 40mph, but they can also sustain that speed for much longer than the mountain lion. They also have strong legs and can deliver a powerful blow to a preditor. National Geographic estimates that only about 1 out of 5 hunts are successful.
