Humpack Tail Lobbing in Inside Passage of Alaska

A tail-lobbing humpback whale! ❤ Humpbacks will position themselves vertically, raise their tail out of the water and slap it down on the water - sometimes multiple times. The slap will create a percussive sound that travels long distances underwater. It is believed that whales do this to communicate with other whales and to remove parasites or barnacles. See in the Inside Passage of Alaska in August 2023.
