Just over the fence on a busy coastal sidewalk lies a colony of nesting Brandt’s cormorants (Phalacrocorax penicillatus). This is right in the middle of the tourist district of La Jolla, California where people come to shop, dine and view the coastal beauty. If you watch closely as you walk along the coastal walkway you might see the Brandt’s cormorants nesting along the cliffs. Their nests look almost fragile against the sea spray but somehow they hold and many successfully chicks are raised here.
