In April 2023 we visited Ranthambore National Park in India. It was opening time and we had just entered the park. We were driving quickly through trying to scan the zone in hope of spotting a tiger. Suddenly our guide spotted movement off to our left – it was a golden jackal (Canis aureaus) running by. We quickly stopped and saw it was chasing a spotted deer (Axis axis). Our driver reversed at warp speed along the road to try to catch up. We arrived in time to watch the deer take its final breaths. The jackal was a lactating female. She initially tried to feed on the carcass but seemed to have trouble breaking through the skin. She went off to the side and looked around for a while and rested. We hoped she would call her pups in. Unfortunately, her pups did not join her and she returned to her kill. She tried again to feed on it, but again at least from our angle it did not look like she was able to break through the skin to eat. Eventually we moved on. Hopefully she was able dine on it before something else claimed the carcass
