Polar Reflections

We traveled in the Barents Sea near Svalbard and spent the day near a narwhale carcass. Several polar bears had gathered and were taking turns feeding. After each fed it would move a short distance a way to sleep and digest its feast until it could make room for the next feeding round. Our boat had moved a short distance away to anchor for the night. The smell of the carcass seemed to attract this mom and her two cubs (one pictured here). They took their time sniffing the air and checking out the ice. With so many male bears around the carcass the mom did not approach, but instead investigated at a distance. They were far enough away that they were relaxed even taking time to rest and play. Eventually they moved on across the sea ice.
