I’ve been visiting a small community of burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia) near an airport in the metropolis around Los Angeles, California. After several visits, I wanted something unique so I visited in the evening to see what backlighting would offer. I positioned myself so the owl would be framed by the setting sun. The position was awkward. I had to get down low, avoid other photographers, and since we were shooting in the median of a road avoid traffic. I was able to balance my 600mm on one knee and use the articulating screen to view my shot. The air pollution from the city and airport gave the sunset the brilliant orange color.
