In August, 2023 we toured the inside passage of Alaska from a small boat focusing on wildlife viewing. We stopped in the small subsistence town of Kake. There is a fish hatchery in town and returning salmon attracted black bears (Ursus americanus) to Gunnuk Creek. We spent a couple of days waiting and watching the bears. There were some long waits without bears. During one of these slow periods I walked down the road and found a spot near an underpass where a couple of bears were heading. Eventually one of the bears stopped and fished across the river from me. It was thrilling to sit unobtrusively on the side watching the bear catch a couple of salmon before it continued up river.
