In the urban sprawl of Southern California a few remaining burrowing owls raise their chicks in an empty field surrounded by an airport and industry. After visiting the nest several times during the morning front light, I wanted to try to capture something different and try the backlight of the setting sun. The nest was next to a road and to get an angle where the backlight would work I had to get really low in the middle of a road. With one eye toward traffic and one on the owl I was able to capture this chick as he practices his flight skills in short hops to the top of the log.
