It was the day after a storm had dumped two feet of snow in an area near Torres del Paine National Park in Chile. It was bitter cold – the car temperature red -22 C (-7.6 F) as we traveled to the ranch area that morning. A tracker found this puma a male named Patagon at the top of a hill. We hiked through the deep snow to see him and waited a few hours while he rested. Every once in a while he would get up and change position but always next to the rock. It seemed that rock was providing some wind shelter from the cold while he was in a perfect place to observe his surroundings.
