Cheetah Family Portrait

A cheetah mom and young cubs rest as the day warms up near the Ndutu Lodge in the Serengeti plains, Tanzania. When we came across this mother she was nursing her young cubs. After a bit the family journeyed on sometimes through grasses that were taller than the cubs. Before the cubs got too hot or tired, they settled in the shade of another tree. The mom was constantly on alert looking around for other predators. As the day warmed up we moved on and left them in the shade. We were in the area for several more days, but did not see this group again. A couple of days later our guide told us that another group had found the mom, but at this point she only had one cub left. The mortality rate for cheetah cubs is high with some reports indicating that only 5-10% survives to adulthood.
