Polar Bear – Barents Sea near Svalbard
It was early August and the ice that had formed around Svalbard was quickly breaking up. This photo shows a mom and one of her three yearling cubs. When we came upon them they were wandering across the loose pack ice. They had fresh blood on them showing the remnants of recent meal. They curiously approached the boat, some braver coming close and others hanging back. After checking out the ship they wandered off to find a good spot to nap after their meal. Triplets and especially yearling triplets are extremely rare. The cubs were well fed proving that mom was an excellent hunter. Her job however was about to get much more difficult as the ice in the area was very quickly breaking up and melting away for the season.
